Introduction to International Ocean Freight Services:

International ocean cargo transportation refers to the act where the carrier transports goods from a port in one country to a port in another country via sea routes, using ocean vessels as the means of transport and charging freight as remuneration, in accordance with the stipulations of the cargo transport contract. International Ocean Freight is the primary mode of transport in international trade, accounting for over two-thirds of total international trade volume. The vast majority of China's import and export goods are transported via ocean shipping.

Full Container Load (FCL):

This typically involves units of 20ft, 40ft, 40HQ, or 45HQ containers. This method is usually adopted when the shipper has sufficient cargo to fill one or several full containers. Except for some large shippers who own their own containers, most rent containers from carriers or leasing companies. After the empty containers are transported to the factory or warehouse, under the supervision of customs officials, the shipper loads the goods, locks the container, and seals it with a lead seal. The shipper then delivers the container to the carrier and obtains a yard receipt, which is later exchanged for a Bill of Lading. The B/L will include the clause "Shipper's Load, Count, and Seal."

Less than Container Load (LCL):

This refers to the consolidation service provided by the carrier (or agent) after accepting small lots of cargo from shippers that are insufficient to fill a full container. Based on the nature of the goods and destination, the carrier or freight forwarder classifies and consolidates them. Goods destined for the same location are concentrated and loaded into a shared container. Since goods from different shippers are packed together, it is called LCL. This method is used when the shipper's cargo volume is insufficient to fill a full container. Common consolidation volumes include 1 CBM, 5 CBM, or 10 CBM. The classification, sorting, consolidation, loading (and deconsolidation), and delivery of LCL cargo are all carried out at the carrier's container freight station (CFS) or inland container depot (ICD).

Ocean Bill of Lading (B/L):

The Ocean Bill of Lading is a document that serves as evidence of the contract of carriage by sea, the receipt of goods by the carrier, and the undertaking to deliver the goods at the port of discharge. The B/L is a document of title; the holder can take delivery of the goods, use it to negotiate payment with banks (using the documents as collateral for short-term loans under Letters of Credit), or transfer it before the ship arrives at the destination port. The Ocean Bill of Lading generally refers to the Port-to-Port Shipped on Board Marine Bill of Lading, commonly abbreviated as Ocean B/L. Although each shipping line has its own format, the columns and content are basically consistent. The basic requirement for exporters preparing the B/L and banks reviewing it is "compliance between documents."
